Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the intensity of systemic inflammation by evaluating serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in patients with opioid dependence (OD) and in those with OD comorbid with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). A total of 135 patients with opioid depend- ence (104 men and 31 women) aged 18–49 years were examined, including 95 patients with comorbid chronic hepatitis C (75 men and 20 women) aged 19–49 years. All patients underwent dynamic measurement of serum IL-6 levels. Discriminant analysis of this pro-in- flammatory cytokine across groups with OD and OD combined with CHC at different stages of the disease showed that the most pronounced intergroup differences were observed during remission (F = 67.6; p < 0.001) and the late withdrawal period (F = 41.4; p < 0.001). Less prominent differences were detected during acute intoxication (F = 13.7; p < 0.001) and the early withdrawal period (F = 6.9; p < 0.001).
